The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant is provided by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to assist individuals who are in need of financial support. Here’s how you can apply for the SRD Grant:
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the SRD Grant, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee registered on the Home Affairs database.
- Be between the ages of 18 and 59.
- Be unemployed.
- Not be receiving any social grant, unemployment insurance benefits, or any other government COVID-19 response support.
- Not be receiving a stipend from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
- Reside within the borders of the Republic of South Africa.
Application Process
You can apply for the SRD Grant through various channels:
Online Application
- Visit the SASSA SRD website: https://srd.sassa.gov.za/said
- Click on the “Apply for SRD Grant” button.
- Follow the prompts to complete the online application form.
- You will need to provide your personal details, contact information, and bank account details for payments.
- Submit your application.
- Add SASSA’s WhatsApp number to your contacts: 082 046 8553.
- Send a message saying “SRD” to the WhatsApp number.
- Follow the prompts to provide your personal information and submit your application.

You can also visit your nearest SASSA office for assistance with the application process.
After Applying
- Once you have submitted your application, you will receive a confirmation.
- SASSA will review your application and may request additional documentation if necessary.

How do I change my banking details
If you are an approved beneficiary of the SASSA SRD R370 Grant and you wish to change your banking details, please submit your ID Number below. An SMS containing a secure link, unique to you, will be sent to the mobile phone number with which you registered during application.
Click on the link in the SMS and follow the instructions carefully.
Should you select payment into a bank account, please ensure that you are the owner of the account. SASSA cannot pay your grant into another person’s bank account.
Should you select the money transfer option via one of the major banks, please ensure that the mobile phone number on which you received the SMS is registered in your name. SASSA cannot pay your grant into a mobile phone number which is registered to another person.
Please also note that the new banking details will only be used for future payments, after verification.id number
